Douglas W. Gann, Preservation Archaeologist

Doug has over 22 years of experience in archaeological fieldwork, research, and public interpretation. His Masters research was focused on the use of form-molded adobe brick architecture by the ancestral Hopi prior to its re-introduction by the Spanish. His Ph.D. dissertation research concerned the implications of space syntax theory in the archaeological analysis of social uses of space.

As a graduate student, Doug has pursued fieldwork at numerous sites in Southwest, as well as Ecuador, Armenia, and the eastern seaboard region of the United States. More recently, Doug has been working to preserve and interpret the site of Casa Malpais National Historic Landmark, as well as researching techniques for the generation of three dimensional models from linked sets of two dimensional photographs.

Doug is developing applications from a diverse set of new media tools for interactive exhibit design and archaeological interpretation. He has created numerous interactive museum exhibits and three-dimensional computer models, including the interactive exhibit, "Rio-Nuevo Rio-Viejo: 10,000 Years of Tucson History." Currently on display at the Arizona Historical Society, with exhibit elements also on display at the Arizona State Museum. These exhibits highlight Doug's research on three-dimensional reconstructions of the San Agustine mission and the Tucson Presidio. These digital reconstructions form the basis for the interpretation of many elements of the Tucson Origins Heritage Park, which is expected to be completed in 2009. Doug is also both assiting in website planning and design for the Center and the editor of Southwestern Archaeology Today, the Center's electronic archaeological news service.
